Scribbles and Scrambles ~ Late to the FOURTH

Monday was Star Wars day. May the Fourth be with you. Monday, May 4th. Ha ha.

I didn't know till too late in the day to really celebrate it right.

But I have a little something for Star Wars fans. Or not. See, I have a little ewok type character who can do a mean impersonation of ... wait for it....

Princess Leia.

On Instagram it was noted that this had to be a love child between the princess and an ewok. I think maybe some other alien life form might be in the mix as well. She does have the perfect ear buns though. Almost as intricate as Leia's.

Scribbles and Scrambles...Good News and ... Well.

Have I told you that we've been training Gertrude and Gladys to ring bells to let us know they need to go out and use the potty?  I had some clearance Christmas jingle bells laying around and when I saw them during one of my massive 1000 items-outta-here-house-purgings I knew exactly what to do with them. I hung two on twine times three sets and looped them over the front and back door knobs and upstairs railing.

After several weeks without accidents I think the girls have mastered the potty bells! That's the good news. They even have the upstairs bells figured out.

Unfortunately, what I'm calling potty bells might actually be servant bells as in ring-for-the-maid bells. You see the bells get rung a little more often than they should. Since I have trained them that the bells get my immediate attention and purposeful activity they have taken notice.

Yesterday the bells rang and when I popped my head around the corner and asked if they needed to go potty the pups went to the squirrel garage and looked up. Ahhh.

I've told you that Beagles are very smart and determined...like three year olds and thirteen year olds all rolled into one. Yeah. I'm in trouble.

Scribbles and Scrambles ~ Sun and Fun

You gotta love lazy spring afternoons, right? The girls had a rousing game of squirrel chase as soon as I got home from work. Then we went outside to chill. Gertie and Gladys barked at birds, squirrels and neighbors. They also ran and dug. Several times they took rest breaks by leaping onto my lap while I was reading. Yes, my pages definitely got dog-eared. The most exciting find of the day was the dried up earthworm they dug out of a crack in the patio.

Scribbles and Scrambles ~ Squirrel!

As I type this I am being buffeted and body slammed by my beasts. Wrestling is pretty much 85% of their non-napping time. The other 15% is eating or begging for treats. Wait. That's not fair. Out of the 85% comes "Squirrel Time" "Squirrel Time" is a flirt stick. The girls LOVE the squirrel on a stick. It helps that it has two squeakers. When they get a hold of it they go to town. Squirrel Time is a daily or twice daily event. They run to the refrigerator and look up and sit patiently waiting for me to take down the world's best toy. In case I'm not paying attention Gertrude will let out an occasional bark to let me know that it is most definitely time to play.

Scribbles and Scrambles - Blog Repellent

I was planning on an epic post. But the girls wanted snuggle time. Could you resist? Yeah. Me either.

Scribbles and Scrambles ~ Thump in the Night...

Another fairly normal weekend at my house. I have begun to get ruthless with my clutter purging. I'm building a pile of clothes that I put on in the morning and for whatever reason take off. Either it doesn't feel right, look right or match. In just a few weeks if I don't pick the item back out and wear it, it's outta here.

Cookbooks are also on my chopping block. I'm actually going through them and if I don't see recipes I'll make or feel inspired by they are outta here, too.

The other night Rob and I headed upstairs. As per usual, Gladys went downstairs to get her toys. The usual whining during the attempt to gather all of them in one mouthful drifted upstairs. Then a weird sound, a slow thump, pause, thump...repeat. She was dragging a huge rope tug toy and it hit each step with a thump. The picture is her enjoying the toy as a pillow.

The other picture is raspberry frosting that was going to go into cake pups I made for the Vet tech program at Rob's school. (They work for food, as in they used Gladys and Gertrude's surgeries for training and the promise of treats. Nice deal.) But, I had to make more because while I was busy doing something else Rob was putting our dinner on plates. We had Gardein stuffed cutlets that came with gravy. So with my back to him,  I gestured to the little plastic gravy bag and said, "Hey, there's gravy for those." I turned around as he was smearing the frosting from the bowl on his cutlet. Oops!

Scribbles and Scrambles ~ Numbers and Nuggets

My getting rid of project is clicking right along. My count is at 534. I love the fact that I've got space in most of my drawers and closets. Don't worry. I can still keep going and make my 1,000. I decreased my Christmas decorations even further after Christmas. Why? Because what I didn't put out lots of my stuff. And I needed to assess why that was. Most of it went. I also haven't missed a single thing I've gotten rid of.  Every day I've managed to find a handful of items slated for the get rid of pile.

And my new additions (just 2 items, except the toys....some of which have already had the squeakers excised so I'm not counting them) winter coats for the girls. Ha. Ha. How cute are those? I need to make some adjustments the neck velcro is a little tight and keeps popping.

Scribbles and Scrambles ~ Flirty Pups

I went to Minnesota for the weekend and came home with a handmade toy for the pups.

Michelle sent me this link and wondered if I wanted to make one while visiting. Since the temperature high was in the low 20's and low was wind-chill-minus-20-something I thought that seemed like a great idea. That and the fact that the little misses at my house always need a few sources of entertainment. Gertie has very sensitive feet and doesn't care for the snow, and neither of them should be bored since they come up with ways to entertain themselves. This thing seemed like a win win.

Michelle's dog is a Boxer, her grandpup is a Dachshund and Gertie and Gladys are small Beagles so we each made different versions of the stick and I think have play more so in mind than training. But training is actually something I'm going to put on my radar.  We went to Home Depot for the supplies. Twice. And managed to have some fun in both stores. We even got scolded. Ha. Ha. Apparently, me trying to slip a dangle of rope hanging 10 feet over my head into a 1/2 inch round PVC pipe to see if it fit constitutes me trying to hit people with a stick while my partner was filming me. Granted, I was laughing, I'm sure it looked ridiculous (it did, I saw the video) she was filming, and anyone coming down the aisle could've been in danger...but it was all legit. And when we explained what we were doing we even made a "friend" (Kinda. He was a wee bit starchy, if you know what I mean.)

Of course the rope we got was "wrong" according to her husband.

But I digress. We went with 1/2" PVC because the 3/4" called for in the recipe was HEAVY. However, if you want an upper body work out,  go for it. Michelle made hers long, slightly less than 6 feet. I cut mine down to 3 1/2 feet because I'm clumsy. Seriously. I have enough trouble just walking sometimes. Arthur's was 2 feet.

I chose to have double 1/4" nylon (that's the proper one, see above) because I wanted to be able to tie the toy on. And since I'll be watching the entire play time I'm not super concerned about the dangling rope. This also lets me tie it high or low on the end of the rope. And of course we found cute duct tape at Michael's. The toy was clearance at Petsmart, a real bargain if you don't consider that I also bought some other clearance items.

All told, without the other "deals" factored in and with the rope oops we spent less than $10.00 each. Gertie and Gladys, once they got over the barking at the stick, began enjoying the heck out of it. And it's no longer a Christmas toy since the Santa hat was ripped off the head of the two squeakered muskrat/squirrel/beaver thing.

I'll share a video tomorrow. Consider yourself warned.

Scribbles and Scrambles ~ Chillin on a Cold Night

Gladys has been doing a lot of back snoozing of late. Last night she raised both arms and held that pose for a bit. I think she looks a lot like an alligator at gator shows where they flip the gator over and rub it's neck to "hypnotize" it. Not sure what the arms up in the air were all about. But I'm pretty sure it's all about the cuteness factor. Cuz she definitely has that.

Scribbles and Scrambles ~ A Teeny Christmas Recap

I hope your Christmas was wonderful. Mine was rich and full. Christmas Day itself seemed to last 50 hours, but, in a good way. We got some serious kid time in and it was so fun to have little ones around. Noisy, of course, but fun. We simplified our big family gathering by doing finger foods and the traditional soup meal for Christmas Eve was pretty tasty. I conjured up a new soup that I'll likely be sharing here sometime soon. Gotta remake it to make sure I got the measurements down (bummer...if it's any indication my daughter-in-law who doesn't like soup went for two bowls of it).

I might be hit and miss this week. It's kind of nice to take a little break. But then, who knows, I may be super on top of posting. Guess you'll just have to stay tuned.

I can't not share puppy pics. I was going for a cute 8 week/8 month side by side of puppies in things. But the pups were having NOTHING to do with entering the sled.

Scribbles and Scrambles ~ Quirk Alert

Gladys is either a wannabe hunter or nurturer. Not sure which. She routinely disappears into a different room and we'll hear whining. The first few times I took her out to go potty. But then we figured out it was part of her gathering behavior. She attempts to collect all of her toys in one trip. She scoops everything into her mouth, whining until it's full and then trots happily back into the room with us.

She doesn't rip her toys to shreds, even though she and Gertie do remove the stuffing because that's fun to play with. Oh, and the squeakers, those get excised as well.

Here is Gladys's proud catch of the day. A record of three items, one of which is the rubber bone. She's got a personal goal of adding the brown owl/monkey toy and the skinned shark to her personal best.

Scribbles and Scrambles ~ Lazy Wednesday...

So here's a 7 week vs. 7 month picture series of the hounds.

Significant changes have occurred.

I did google how much more to expect regarding growth cycles. And the sources estimate another 2 pounds. But not much more in height. The little stinkers need to chill out.

Scribbles and Scrambles ~ Full Holiday Weekend

I haven't had such a fun weekend in a long time. I'm tired, and a little shell-shocked by temperature extremes, but, hey, that's not uncommon around these parts.

Wednesday night Rob put in a new floor in the mud room/aka puppy room. They have a room. :  ) With a nice big back door entrance and lots of easily swept and/wiped up flooring.

The girls have been alone in their room a few hours at a time with just a couple barricades and plenty of room to roam. So far they are respecting "the crib." This move opened up more room in the living room where the kennel has been resting since May. So we rearranged the living room furniture a little bit and I finished up a functional project I've been working on.

Thursday was a wonderfully laid back day. We had a simple brunch with & and her little ones and a couple of friends. Thanksgiving was the 5 month anniversary of the little ones moving in with & and it was a cherry on the top of the sundae. The kids have bloomed under her mothering and we all love them. They spent the day and we pulled out all the Christmas items and we decorated and loaded up the Christmas tree. I tipped it over and broke two ornaments. But a good time was had by all. And my house feels festive. & and I cooked all the goodies we were going to be eating later that night.

We had Thanksgiving dinner at my folks house. Another lovely get together. And of course the food was pretty amazing. & and I made several vegan options (our main dish was mushroom seitan loaf that was perfect but which I will add maybe a bit more garlic to next time I make it.)  and my new sister-in-law and brother made a delish pumpkin cheesecake.  Super delish.

Friday night found me at &'s helping them decorate their place. The kids had so much fun. The 5 and 3 year olds especially got into decorating little Christmas trees for their rooms. So cute. Pure excitement.

Saturday night we headed over again to decorate gingerbread houses with Toad Boy and the Mrs. One more Christmas thing on Sunday night at church rounded out the whole kid centric weekend. But. In exchange for all the work, I got lots of hugs and kisses, and a raging cold. Ha. Ha. I'm good with that.

Scribbles and Scrambles ~ Crack Me Up

Seriously. The girls were crashed on the couch until we decided to watch Dogs with Jobs on Netflix.  Ha ha! The episode was the Cheetah parent surrogate Jack Russell Terrier and Rookie the Canadian Beagle who sniffs out food and agricultural items that people bring into the country. At the first sign of the Jack Russell Terrier the girls were focused in rapt attention. Too cute! And yes, we are still in the 20th century with our television. I think it's about the size of my computer screen.

Scribbles and Scrambles ~ Miscellaneous and A Beagle Shaming Moment

I took the day off work today. I had no x-rays and I have a serious MOP on my head.

That said. My snip and tame girl had an opening and it was just tempting to take the day. And my house needs me. Real bad. I don't know how my house can get in the shape it does. Well, I do. But I don't want to park there, ya know?

So before 9:00 a.m. I had swept, tidied, unloaded, loaded, loaded and washed, dried and folded. And painted. The pups always need to be right up in my bizness. But while they are in my bizness I know exactly what they are doing.
It's when they are quiet and speedy in the opposite direction that concerns me. I had to wrestle an unmentionable from jaws, fortunately, the item had come from the dryer. But I missed this one. I got distracted hating on some clothes (and folding them up for the glorious drop off to a thrift store later today. Yay!) and one of the sneaks took a shoe from my closet floor.
I am so glad it's a shoe I hated. Super uncomfortable, and they may have already been clamped in jaws and rescued once. But I still needed to shame those Beagles. Gladys finally accepted the shame. She's the one that gutted the shoe. However, if you notice in the lower picture that Gertrude doesn't seem the least bit sorry. Nope. I'm pretty sure she's the sneaky grabber, too.

Do you wonder how I got them to kinda sit still long enough for the shaming? I was carrying a food item in my non-picture snapping hand. I didn't think I could pull off one of those awesome dog shaming signs. I think they'd eat it.

Scribbles and Scrambles ~ Adventure Times Two

So. It was an interesting Monday on top of an interesting weekend. I'll not focus on the computer issues aka crisis of monumental significance for the office (or sure seemed like it to a few folks). Nor will I focus on the furniture moving, the cleaning frenzy, the donating items I no longer want, the wearing of pajamas until 4:00 p.m, the wipe out on the back patio on Saturday. No, those are a story for another day.
Let's talk about puppy digestion. I have just heard, twice, that pumpkin is a lovely binder and hence it will become a regular pantry staple item for the pups. Gertrude has a little tummy bug, she tossed her treats Friday afternoon and took a few extra visits outdoors for emergency style gotta-goes. I was a little concerned that she'd have overnight issues. I want to set them up for success. So I kept one ear open and sure enough a whining commenced at midnight. Because getting them in and out of the kennel, in and out of harnesses and wrangling them for leash attachment can be harrowing in normal circumstances, when a puppy has to go NOW that adds a bit of drama, so I decided to keep them in their harnesses and let them sleep with me on the couch. Every two hours we visited the frozen way-too-early-winter-wonderland to make a deposit.

Night number one was a huge success. No accidents and lots of brisk fresh air. Saturday night the visits were even fewer to the great outdoors. And Sunday. Well. I think the fun factor kicked in. Maybe the tummy isn't feeling quite as punk. Maybe they are loving the freedom. But the picture of the back and front was pretty much a constant blur. One pup picked my hip, the other chose to sleep in the crook of my knee. But, wait, there needed to be circling. Lots of circling. And inching. And itching. And licking and then the growling because a sister crept a bit too close to a territory.

Swimming with the dolphins, sleeping with the puppies, swimming with the sharks, sleeping with the fishes. Pick your adventure.

Scribbles and Scrambles ~ First Snow for Pups

For some reason the snow and arrival of winter weather threw me. I mean, I live in an area that certainly gives huge clues of climate changes. And winter comes every stinkin year. There are degrees of winter, but, it isn't a "hmmmm, did we have winter this year?" kind of a place. Ya know.

I spose I shoulda prepared the pups. But I just didn't think I needed to. Yet.

Here are the degrees of winter awareness and acceptance. In this instance there are four degrees.

The first response was porch statuing. That is where they refused to move and turned to stone. Once I stepped out into the white foreign substance they followed. (They'd probably make me test their food and drink if they could speak and owned scepters. No, wait. I think they do consider me a food tester. Except I'm eating people food that they legitimately think is theirs.)

Second was the discovery phase where they basked in the newness of it all. Many minutes in the still silence of the gray blanket of cold were punctuated with deep sniffing and snoodling.

Thirdly was the discovery of this amazing, miraculous substance's perks. It's edible. Thin layers of it could be broken off and consumed. Greedy snow grazing commenced.

Finally, the marking of the snow. This is their snow. Nobody but nobody needs to doubt that.

At least they didn't stand and bark at it.

Scribbles and Scrambles ~ Weekend Fun With Pups...

The pups got to go trick or treating with the kids Friday night. Amazingly, they didn't rip their costumes to shreds (Nor anyone else's, whew). I didn't see them even nibbling at each other. It probably helped that they were focused on the kids candy filled pumpkins and a little shell-shocked with all the sights and sounds of Halloween. The temperature was a brisk 40 something.  There were a few costume tilts and leans. But they looked pretty stylin,

Saturday we had a little incident. Rob and I had a huge Aloe Vera plant that we separated into about 30 different plants. We had a few we hadn't given away. And since it had gotten cold we pulled them inside and put them on the mud room floor.

So the pups were running free indoors while I was doing some cooking. And it got really, really quiet. I tiptoed and peeked around the corner. And spied a dirt party in progress. Oh yeah, they were having lots of fun. The blurry pictures stink but the dirt coated noses were too funny.

Scribbles and Scrambles ~ Crazy Cycle

Gladys and Gertrude have a favorite game. I finally got enough footage to merge it all together so I can share it with you.

We have two couches forming an L shape and they love to chase each other from one couch to the other. They really love to use me as a spring board to help them on their crazy journey.
